The Surrogate

art, design, fabrication

The Surrogate is a project that imagines what the opposite of a virtual reality headset might be, and how it would be used. Welding glass in front of one's eyes restricts visual input to only bright lights, and sound channeled through the top and into the ears picks up resonance in the tubes and becomes morphed and obscured.

Wearing The Surrogate is a meditative and somewhat disorienting experience. In the imagined future the piece fits into, it is used to ease the transition between VR and the real world, and to rehabilitate people who have decided they no longer want to spend their lives in a virtual reality.     For my final presentation of the project, I performed a character named Captain Desmond who sells Surrogates for a living. The presentation was filmed on a 360 camera, and can be viewed in browser or in a VR headset.
