Burrow

design, fabrication, UX design, electronics

For the final project of my design studio in Spring 2017, we were assigned to create a table, in conjunction with a light source and timer, that conveyed uncertainty. My design, Burrow, is a desk that creates private space in public places and helps you take a nap when you get tired. This was a culmination of two previous projects that I iterated on to end up with the final design.

Burrow has a pulsing light and haptic in the table to facilitate breathing during the nap. When time is up, the haptic cuts off and the LED's revert to a reading light as a form of subtle alarm.

I designed a shape with compound curves that needed to be fabricated in strips and bent into shape.

The frame for the desk was fabricated in multiple sections of 1" thick steel tubing. I bent them into shape while cold and welded them together to create a flowing form.

I used a CNC router to cut plywood pieces that formed a frame for the desk exterior. This was used to melt and bend the PVC around and create the correct form.
